Samurai were warriors in feudal Japan. They worked for the daimyo, and based themselves around honour. They had to train for many years, and after that, had to live by a strict code, which could involve death if honour was lost. They had strong armour and powerful weapons which helped lead them to victory on the battle. The samurai truly was a force to be reckoned with.
To become a samurai, a person would have to go through many years of training. They could begin when they were 6, and were usually taught by professional teachers. The samurai in training would learn about the values of the samurai, calligraphy, etiquette, as well as military training. At the age of 15, the young samurai officially became an adult. During a special ceremony called 'gembuku', he would receive his special ceremonial clothes, his adult name, and his sword. After this, he would go on to provide military service to the daimyo, much like the European knights provided military service to nobles and church officials.
After their training, samurai lived by a code known as 'Bushido'. This was like a code of conduct. Samurai were expected to be strong and skilled warriors, as well as having total obedience to their masters, even being prepared to die for them. It was like a code of honour, and samurai were supposed to help the weak and use their fighting skills for good. If a samurai did not act honourably, or was caught or defeated in battle, then they were bond to commit 'seppuku', which means cutting open the belly or suicide. The code was very strict and had to be abided by at all times.
On the battlefield, samurai had a devastating effect. They wore helmets that were often decorated with fighting creatures. This meant that the samurai's head was protected and the enemy would be scared by his appearance. Their body armour was like an overcoat made out of steel plates tied together with cord. It was loose enough for them to move easily. Their main weapons were bows and arrows, and two curved swords at different lengths. The two swords was the mark of the samurai, because they were the only people allowed to carry them. Samurai sometimes fought on horseback, but not as much as the European knights.
